Introducing the Kansas City Roos

The Kansas City Roos are a Division I men’s basketball team that represents the University of Missouri–Kansas City The team is a member of the Western Athletic Conference They play their home games at the UMKC Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City Missouri.

The Roos finished the 2017–18 season with a record of 21–12, and 11–7 in conference play They defeated CSU Bakersfield in the first round of the WAC Tournament before losing to New Mexico State in the semifinals.

Head coach Kareem Richardson is entering his sixth season with the Roos in 2018–19. He has led the team to two postseason appearances, including an NCAA tournament berth in 2017.

The Kansas City Roos men’s Basketball team is gearing up for the NCAA Tournament The team has had an excellent season so far, winning 28 of their 32 games. Here is a look at the team’s road to the tournament.

The Roos began their season with high hopes, ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 poll for the first time in program history. They started off strong, winning their first eight games. Among those wins were victories over then-#24 Iowa State and then-#16 Oklahoma State two teams that would go on to have excellent seasons themselves. The Roos continued to rack up wins, eventually claiming the top spot in the poll after a 14-0 start to the season.

The Roos’ first loss of the season came in early January on the road against Baylor, a game in which they were never really in contention. They bounced back from that loss with four straight wins, but then suffered another setback, this time at home against Kansas State The Wildcats handed the Roos their worst loss of the season, losing by 20 points.

The Roos responded well to that loss, winning eight of their next nine games. That stretch included another signature win, this time over then-#3 Texas Tech on the road. The win over Texas Tech was part of a five-game Winning Streak that propelled the Roos back into the AP Top 25 poll.

The Roos closed out their regular season with a thrilling overtime win over TCU on senior night They then entered the Big 12 tournament as the #2 seed, where they lost in the semifinals to Iowa State Despite that loss, they received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and will enter as a #4 seed in the Midwest Region. They will take on #13 New Mexico State in their first game on Friday afternoon.

The Roos in the NCAA Tournament

In 1975, the Kansas City Roos men’s basketball team was founded. The Roos were a Division II program until they joined the Division I ranks in 1988. In their first season as a Division I team, they made it to the NCAA tournament As of 2019, they have made the tournament four times.

The Roos have had some notable players over the years. Barry Hecker was the first player in school history to be named an All-American. Oscar Robertson’s son, Nick, played for the Roos from 2002 to 2006 and is the All-time leading scorer in school history. Jimmy McKinney was a member of the Roos’ 1988 NCAA tournament team and went on to play in the NBA for 11 seasons.

The Roos’ 2017-2018 Season

The Roos finished the 2015-16 season with a record of 15-17 overall and 5-9 in conference play They finished in seventh place in the conference and did not qualify for the conference tournament

The 2016-17 season will be the Roos’ first under Head Coach Kareem Richardson. Richardson was hired on April 11, 2016 after spending the previous four seasons as an Assistant Coach at Louisville.

The Roos’ 2015-2016 Season

The 2015-2016 season was one to remember for the Kansas City Roos men’s basketball team The team made it all the way to the Elite Eight, and they did it with a roster full of talented players. Here’s a look at some of the key members of that team:

Guard Marcus Garrett was one of the team’s leading scorers, averaging 13.6 points per game He was also a key contributor on defense, averaging 2.1 steals per game.

Forward Samajae Haynes-Jones was another key player for the Roos, averaging 11.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game He was a versatile player who could score inside and out, and he was also a very good defender.

Center Udoka Azubuike was a force in the middle for the Roos, averaging 10.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. He was a big presence on defense as well, blocking 2.5 shots per game.

Forward Silvio De Sousa was a key reserve for the Roos, averaging 7.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in just under 20 minutes of action per game. He was a very efficient player, shooting nearly 60 percent from the field.

The Roos’ 2014-2015 Season

The Roos finished the 2014-2015 season with a record of 12-19 overall and 4-14 in conference play. The season was highlighted by wins over then-ranked No. 23 New Mexico, as well as conference foes Marshall and Florida Atlantic

The 2013-2014 season was another successful one for the Roos. They finished the Regular Season with a record of 26-6 and won the MIAA regular season title with a conference record of 16-4. The team once again advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight and finished the season ranked sixth in the nation.

The Roos’ 2012-2013 Season

The Kansas City Roos men’s Basketball team will look to build on the success of last season when they take the court for the 2012-2013 season. head coach Matt Brown will return for his second season at the helm of the Roos, and he will have a talented group of players to work with.

Leading the way for the Roos will be senior point guard Nathan Millard. Millard was named First Team All-Conference last season after averaging 14.1 points and 5.1 assists per game He will be joined in the backcourt by junior shooting guard Ryan McEvoy, who averaged 9.3 points per game last season.

In the frontcourt, senior forward Xavier Johnson returns after averaging 11.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game last season. He will be joined by junior forwards Marcus Lewis and Tyler Thomas, who both saw significant playing time last season.

The Roos will look to make a run at the conference title this season, and they should have no problem doing so with this group of talented players leading the way.
