Why Kevin Norris is the Best Player in the World
Kevin Norris is the best basketball player in the world. There, I said it. And I firmly believe it.
I know what you’re thinking: “But, Nate, he’s not even in the NBA!” True, Kevin Norris is not currently playing in the NBA. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t the best player in the world.
In fact, Kevin Norris is so good that he was recently named MVP of The Basketball Tournament (TBT), a 64-team, single-elimination tournament featuring some of the best players in the world who are not currently in the NBA.
So, why do I think Kevin Norris is the best player in the world? Let me give you three reasons:
1) He’s an elite scorer.
In TBT, Kevin Norris averaged 22.6 points per game which was good for fourth-best in the entire tournament. But it’s not just his scoring average that impresses me; it’s also his efficiency. Kevin shot an absurd 52.5% from three-point range and 46.2% from the field overall. For comparison’s sake, Steph Curry – widely considered to be the best shooter in NBA history – has a career three-point percentage of 43.6%. In other words, Kevin Norris is a better shooter than Steph Curry Enough said.
2) He’s a great playmaker
Not only can Kevin score at will, but he’s also an excellent playmaker for his teammates. In TBT, he averaged 5 assists per game (tied for 10th-best in the tournament) and had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (1.19). Those are impressive numbers for any player, let alone one who is also tasked with being a primary scorer on his team.
Kevin Norris: The Unstoppable Force
Norris, who is 6-foot-11 and 220 pounds, was a star player at Detroit’s Martin Luther King high school He then played for two years at Vincennes University a junior college in Indiana. Norris averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds per game as a sophomore, leading Vincennes to the national Junior College Championship game Afterward, he was named the Junior College National Player of the year.
Kevin Norris: The greatest basketball player of All Time
In a time when the game of basketball is considered to be at its highest level ever, there are always those players who stand out above the rest. When it comes to the greatest of all time, there is only one player who comes to mind: Kevin Norris.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Kevin Norris was always considered a gifted athlete. He started playing organized basketball at the age of eight, and it quickly became apparent that he had a rare combination of size, speed, and power. By the time he was in high school Kevin was already 6’7″ and 220 pounds, with a wing span that measured an astounding 7’4″. He was also an incredible leaper, able to dunk the ball with ease.
Despite his immense physical gifts, Kevin’s road to becoming the greatest basketball player of all time was not an easy one. He was often passed over by bigger and more established programs, eventually landing at a small Division III school called Cheyney University It was there that Kevin began to hone his skills and develop into the player we know today.
In his four years at Cheyney, Kevin became one of the most decorated players in Division III history. He led his team to four consecutive conference championships and was named the conference’s Player of the Year three times. He also holds the distinction of being the only player in Division III history to be named First Team All-American four times.
After graduating from Cheyney, Kevin spent a brief period playing professionally in Europe before returning to the United States to join the newly-formed American Basketball Association (ABA). In his two seasons with the ABA, Kevin led his team to back-to-back championships and was named League MVP both years.
Upon the ABA’s demise, Kevin joined the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers for what would ultimately be the final two years of his storied career. Although he was clearly past his prime at this point, Kevin still managed to make an impact on the court; during his final season with Philadelphia, he averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds per game while shooting over 50% from the field.
Kevin Norris retired from basketball in 1975 after 11 years as a professional. In total, he played in 1,326 games (1,059 in the regular season and 267 in postseason play), averaging 19 points per game while shooting an incredible 52% from the field. He is also a five-Ime Nba champion (two with Philadelphia and three with New York) and two-time Finals MVP (1971 with New York and 1972 with Philadelphia). Norris is widely considered to be one of basketball’s all-time greats; he was inducted into both The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (1989) and The college basketball Hall of Fame (2006).
