Lemoyne Owen College began its Basketball Program in 1949. The team had moderate success in its early years, but it was not until the hiring of Head Coach William “Red”paden in 1957 that the program began to experience sustained success. Under Coach RedPaden, the team won 15 consecutive conference championships and made nine appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament. The team’s success continued into the 1990s under head coach Dave Loos, who led the team to four more conference championships and three NCAA Division II tournament appearances. Today, the Lemoyne Owen College basketball team is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and competes in the Mid-South Conference

Coach John McLendon is considered one of the most influential coaches in Basketball History He was the first African American Head Coach at a predominantly white college and is credited with inventing the fast break Coach McLendon led Lemoyne-Owen to back-to-back NAIA National Championships in 1957 and 1958.

Coach Wayne Yates took over the program in 1968 and led Lemoyne-Owen to six consecutive conference championships from 1969 to 1974. His teams were known for their tough defense and he helped produce some of the greatest players in school history, including future NBA All-Star Sidney Moncrief.

Coach David Pitts took over the program in 2006 and has led Lemoyne-Owen to five conference championships in his tenure. Under his leadership, the team has made three NCAA tournament appearances and has produced several professional players, including current NBA player Xavier Munford.

5. 2017-2018 Team
This team was special. They had a chance to be the first team in LOC history to go undefeated in the regular season and they did it with ease. Their only 2 losses came against NCAA Division I opponents and they won the SCAC West Conference with a perfect 10-0 record. They also set a new school record for wins in a season with 29. Unfortunately, their season came to an end in the second round of the conference tournament but this team will always be remembered for their amazing regular season performance.

4. 2006-2007 Team
This was a very talented team that finished the season 28-5 and won the SCAC West Conference with an 8-2 record. They also made it to the second round of the conference tournament before losing to eventual champion Tougaloo College This team is also notable for being ranked #1 in the nation in scoring defense, giving up only 52 points per game

3. 2002-2003 Team
This team is one of only two Lemoyne Owen teams to ever make it to the NCAA Division II National Tournament (the other being the 2015-2016 team). They finished the season 23-7 and won the SCAC West Conference with an 8-2 record before losing to Alabama A&M in the first round of the Conference Tournament They did, however, receive an at-large bid to the National Tournament where they defeated Lakeland College before losing to Florida Southern in the second round.

2. 2015-2016 Team
This team will always be remembered for being Lemoyne Owen’s first ever NCAA Division II national tournament team. They finished their Regular Season 27-4 and won both the SCAC West Conference regular season and tournament titles with perfect 12-0 records. They then went on to win one game inthe national tournament before losing to Nova Southeastern University in the second round.

Burks is joined by fellow senior guard Malik Hines, who was named to the All-Region team last year. The two seniors will provide experience and leadership for a young but talented squad.
