The History of Liberty University’s Women’s Basketball Team

The Liberty University Lady Flames began their journey in 1974 when a group of students started playing intramural basketball. Inspired by the success of the men’s team, they decided to form a women’s team. The team officially became a varsity team in 1980 and joined the Big South Conference in 1983. Since then, the Lady Flames have gone on to win 13 conference championships and make 14 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship appearances.

The Lady Flames have also produced some of the best players in the country. In 2000, point guard Meredith Marsh was named the Big South Conference Player of the Year. In 2001, center Elena Kravchuk was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Year. And in 2005, center Amani Freed-Hardeman was named the Big South Freshman of the Year.

The Lady Flames’ Head Coach Katie Meier

Katie Meier is the current head coach of the Liberty Flames basketball team In her eleven seasons as the team’s Head Coach Meier has led the team to nine conference tournament appearances and seven regular season conference championships. She has also been named the Big South Conference Coach of the Year four times. under Meier’s leadership, the Lady Flames have a overall record of 252-127 (.665).

Meier was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She played point guard for the University of Louisville women’s basketball team from 1988 to 1992. As a player, Meier led her team to two Metro Conference Regular Season championships and one Conference Tournament championship. She was named Louisville’s Most Valuable Player in her senior year. After graduation, Meier worked as an Assistant Coach at both Duke University and the University of Florida before being hired as Liberty’s Head coach in 2007.
