In 1916, the Mudville Nine became one of the charter members of the new Professional Baseball League the National League The team was renamed the Williamsport Grays. The Grays went on to win four National League championships in their first five years in the league.
In 1923, the Grays were purchased by Major League Baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates and became known as the Pittsburgh Farm club. The team continued to play its home games in Williamsport. In 1929, the Pirates moved their farm team to Syracuse, New York, where they remained for two decades.

This sale marked a return to North Carolina forthe franchise –– asthe Burke-led ownership group moved them to Zebulon to play at historic Five County Stadium asthe Zebulondevils Mississippi mudcats’ Triple-A affiliate Tampa Bay Rays Montgomery Biscuits The franchise has remained in Zebulon since then –– taking on its current name of “Mudcats” prior to the 2009 season.
The Mudcats have seen a great deal of success since becoming affiliated with Atlanta –– making it to postseason play seven times and winning five Southern Division Championships (2009-2013).
