The Future of the NBA MOK
The NBA is currently in the middle of a mini renaissance. Scores are up, player movements have been shocking, and the overall product on the court has been excellent. Unfortunately, there has been one black eye on what has otherwise been a great season – the officiating. There have been controversial calls and non-calls almost every night, and it has reached a boiling point. The league’s Players Association is even get involved, filing a grievance against the league over its officiating. It is time for the NBA to make a change, and that change should be to institute a new system of officiating – one that is fair, objective, and accountable: the NBA MOK.
The NBA MOK (Majority Opinion Decision-Making) system would work like this: each game would have three officials, as it does now. However, instead of those officials making all of the calls themselves, they would be responsible for making sure that the correct call is made by consulting with each other and coming to a majority opinion. If they can’t come to a majority opinion, then the call would not be made. This system would take the human element out of officiating, as well as eliminates mistakes that are made byOfficials who don’t see an infraction or aren’t sure about what they saw.
This system isn’t perfect – there will still be blown calls from time to time – but it would be an improvement over what we have now. And importantly, it would hold officials accountable for their mistakes. If an official improperly influences the other two officials to make a certain call, then he or she can be fined or even suspended. This type of accountability is lacking in the current system, where officials are essentially unaccountable for their mistakes.
The NBA MOK system is not a panacea for all of the league’s officiating problems, but it is a step in the right direction. It would create a more fair, objective, and accountable officiating system that would benefit both players and fans alike.
