Following Hayes’ departure for the NBA, Ohio Valley University struggled to maintain its place among college basketball’s elite programs.

The team won conference championships in 1981 and 1982 before making a surprise run to the 1984 NCAA Tournament title game. In 1985, Ohio Valley University joined forces with five other schools to form the Midwestern Athletic Conference (now known as the Mid-American Conference).
