The Ohio Valley University men’s Basketball Program began in 1898, making it one of the oldest programs in the country. The team quickly made a name for itself, winning a National Championship in 1900. The early years of the program were defined by success on the court, as the team won titles in 1902, 1904, and 1905.
In the 1920s, the program entered a period of decline, finishing with losing records in seven out of eight seasons. However, the team rebounded in the 1930s, winning conference championships in 1931 and 1932. The team would go on to enjoy more success in subsequent decades, winning titles in 1942, 1944, 1950, 1951, and 1953.
The 1960s were a decade of great change for Ohio Valley University Basketball Elvin Hayes arrived on campus in 1966 and instantly transformed the team into a national powerhouse. In his three years with the program, Hayes led Ohio Valley University to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and a spot in the 1968 Final Four. Following Hayes’ departure for the NBA, Ohio Valley University struggled to maintain its place among college basketball’s elite programs.
The 1980s saw a return to prominence for Ohio Valley University men’s basketball. The team won conference championships in 1981 and 1982 before making a surprise run to the 1984 NCAA Tournament title game. In 1985, Ohio Valley University joined forces with five other schools to form the Midwestern Athletic Conference (now known as the Mid-American Conference). The move proved to be beneficial for both parties involved, as Ohio Valley won conference titles in 1987 and 1988 while playing against some of the best teams in college basketball

Baker is entering his 10th season as the head coach of the Stags. He has a career record of 274-176 (.608), and has led his teams to six conference tournament appearances and four NCAA Division II tournament berths, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2008. Grapel is in his sixth season as an assistant coach at Ohio Valley University. He has helped the Stags to five conference tournament appearances and four NCAA Division II tournament berths in his five seasons on Baker’s staff. Bjugstad is in his first season as an assistant coach at Ohio Valley University. He served as an assistant coach at Northern Kentucky University for two seasons before joining the Stags’ staff. Potosky is in his first season as an assistant coach at Ohio Valley University. He served as a graduate assistant at Wright State University for two seasons before joining the Stags’ staff.
