The 2007 UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team represented the University of California Los Angeles in 200708 NCAA Division I men’s Basketball season The team was led by head coach Ben Howland, in his fourth year. The Bruins played their home games at Pauley Pavilion and finished the season with a record of 354, and were conference regular season champions of the Pacific-10 Conference with a record of 162. They also won the 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament The Bruins received an at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament receiving the #1 seed in the South region. In the tournament, they defeated Weber State in the first round, Mississippi Valley State in the second round and Texas A&M in the third round. As a result of their Pac-10 Tournament victory over USC, they received an automatic bid to play in the 2008 NIT Final Four where they defeated Indiana for fifth place overall.

The Bruins began the season ranked #5 in both polls. They climbed to #1 for one week after defeating then-#11 Kansas on December 2. They returned to number 1 on January 7 after then-#2 Pittsburgh lost to unranked West Virginia that same day. They remained number 1 seed for four weeks until losing at Stanford on January 28 and dropped out completely from top 25 poll on February 11 after being upset by Oregon at home four days earlier. They bounced back and climbed back into top 25 polls after defeating USC twice but never regained their number 1 ranking despite climbing as high as second place on March 10 after almost all top ranked teams had suffered losses that week.

The Bruins entered Pac-10 tournament as regular season champions and were upset by USC Trojans 6149 in semifinals but rebounded to win third place game against Oregon Ducks 8064 as well as automatic bid into 2008 NIT thereby extending their season into late March/early April. In NIT, they reached final four by winning four games against Nevada Wolf Pack Florida Gators (in overtime), BYU Cougars (in double overtime) and Indiana Hoosiers before losing to Pittsburgh Panthers 6963 for 5th place overall their worst ever finish since 1950 when 6th place was worst possible finish for any team in tournament due to smaller number of teams involved back then.[citation needed]

They received an at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament where they defeated Webster University before losing in the second round to Texas A&M.

UCLA finished the season with a 2611 record (135 in conference play), tied for first place in the Pacific-10 Conference with the USC Trojans They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as a #6 seed, their first appearance in the tournament since 2005. They advanced to the Sweet Sixteen before being defeated by the Memphis Tigers 78-63.

Entering the 2007-08 season, Coach Ben Howland has compiled a 71-27 (.723) record in his three years at UCLA, including leading the Bruins to the NCAA Elite Eight in each of the last two seasons. The Bruins have won 20 or more games in each of Coach Howland’s first three years, only the second time that has been done at UCLA (John Wooden’s first three years, 1948-50).

They finished the season 354, 153 in Pac-10 play to share the conference title with Stanford. They earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as a #1 seed in the South region where they defeated Mississippi Valley State and Western Kentucky to advance to the Sweet Sixteen In the Sweet Sixteen, they narrowly defeated Texas A&M before blowing out Memphis in the Elite Eight. They then advanced to their second straight Final Four where they defeated North Carolina to reach their third consecutive Championship game where they lost to defending National Champion Florida.

This was a team loaded with freshmen talent, as Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook and Darren Collison all saw significant playing time compared to most college freshman. The Bruins started off fast by winning their first 12 games which included two road wins against then No. 11 Indiana and then No. 18 Oregon State which was on a school record 19 game home Winning Streak at that time. After losing at USC on January 5th, they won 12 straight before losing again at Oregon on February 23rd. They then won 8 of their last 9 games en route to another Pac-10 regular season title (shared with Stanford) and a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.
