#0 – Dwayne Cohill – Guard
Dwayne Cohill is a 6’2″ freshman guard from Cleveland, Ohio. He played his High School basketball at Garfield Heights high school where he was a four-year starter and three-time All-Conference selection. Cohill averaged 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game during his senior year, leading his team to the State Semifinals. He has yet to appear in a game for the Flyers.

#1 – Obi Toppin – Forward/Center
Obi Toppin is a 6’9″ redshirt sophomore forward/center from Brooklyn, New York. He originally attended Mount Zion Prep in Baltimore, Maryland before transferring to Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut for his senior year of high school Toppin redshirted his first year at Dayton before becoming one of the Top Players in the country last season, earning A-10 Co-Rookie of the Year honors. He was also named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team and the All-Defensive team Toppin averaged 14 points and 5 rebounds per game last season.

#2 – Trey Landers – Guard/Forward
Trey Landers is a 6’5″ junior guard/forward from Huber Heights, Ohio. He played his high school basketball at Wayne high school where he was a three-time All-Conference selection. Landers averaged 17 points and 8 rebounds per game during his senior year, leading Wayne to an undefeated conference record and a berth in the State Tournament He has appeared in all 73 games over his first two seasons at Dayton, starting 36 of them. Landers is one of the team’s best defenders and he also led the Flyers in rebounding last season with 5 per game.

#3 – Jordan Davis – Guard
Jordan Davis is a 6’2″ sophomore guard from Indianapolis, Indiana. He played his high school basketball at Lawrence North high school where he was named Mr. Basketball of Indiana after averaging 27 points per game as a senior. Davis appeared in all 37 games for Dayton as a freshman, starting 11 of them. He averaged 8 points and 2 assists per game last season while shooting 37% from three-point range

#4 – Jabari Craig – Center
Jabari Craig is a 7’0″ junior center from Raleigh, North Carolina He played his High School basketball at Broughton high school before spending a postgraduate year at Hargrave Military Academy (VA). Craig appeared in 25 games for Dayton as a freshman before missing all of last season due to injury. He is expected to be healthy for this upcoming season and will provide valuable depth behind Obi Toppin in the frontcourt.

The 2019-2020 Dayton Men’s Basketball Roster is filled with talent. Here’s a quick introduction to the team:

Obi Toppin – A 6’9″ forward, Toppin was named the National Player of the Year by the Associated Press. He averaged 20 points and 7 rebounds per game, and shot nearly 60% from the field. He’s considered one of the best players in the country, and will be a key piece for Dayton as they look to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament

Ibi Watson – A 6’5″ guard, Watson averaged 12 points per game while shooting 41% from three-point range. He’ll be counted on to provide some scoring punch off the bench for Dayton.

Jalen Crutcher – A 6’1″ point guard Crutcher led Dayton in scoring (15 ppg) and assists (5 apg) last season. He’s an excellent shooter (49% from the field, 41% from three-point range) and is capable of hitting Big Shots in crunch time. Crutcher will be one of the leaders for Dayton this season.

Ryan Mikesell – A 6’7″ forward, Mikesell is a dangerous three-point shooter (42% last season) and is also a solid rebounder (5 rpg). He’ll start for Dayton this season and will be another important piece on a very talented team.

The starters for the 2019-2020 season

Heading into the 2019-2020 Season the Flyers will feature a balanced mix of experience and youth with eight upperclassmen and six underclassmen comprising the roster. Let’s take an in-depth look at each player who will don the Flyer red and white this season.

Senior forward Obadiah Toppin is the returning AAC Player of the Year and is widely considered one of the best players in college basketball The 6’9″ New York native was a first team All-AAC selection last season, averaging 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 63 percent from the field. Toppin will once again be the focal point of Dayton’s offense, and he will look to lead the team back to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

Fellow senior Trey Landers returns as one of Dayton’s most experienced players. The 6’5″ wing averaged 9.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season while shooting 50 percent from the field. He will once again be counted on to provide scoring and rebounding from the wing, and his leadership will be crucial for a young Flyer team.

Sophomore guard Ibi Watson returns after a successful freshman campaign in which he averaged 8.5 points per game while shooting 39 percent from three-point range. The 6’5″ Michigan native will once again be counted on to provide outside shooting for Dayton, and his development as a playmaker will be crucial for the Flyers this season.

Rounding out the starting lineup are junior forward Ryan Mikesell and freshman guard Jalen Crutcher Mikesell, who missed all of last season due to injury, is a versatile 6’7″ forward who has the ability to score inside and out. He averaged 7.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore, shooting 41 percent from three-point range. Crutcher is a talented freshman point guard who has already shown glimpses of his potential in Dayton’s exhibition games. The 6’1″ Ohio native is a gifted scorer and playmaker who should make an immediate impact for the Flyers this season

The key reserves for the 2019-2020 season

Redshirt freshman Dwayne Cohill and true freshman Jhery Matos will likely see significant minutes off the bench for the Flyers this season.

Cohill is a 6-foot-2 guard from Cleveland, Ohio who was ranked as a four-star recruit by ESPN coming out of High School He redshirted last season after suffering a Knee Injury early in the year.

Matos is a 6-foot-7 forward from the Dominican Republic who chose Dayton over offers from Florida, Louisville, and others. He’s been praised for his athleticism and shooting ability.

Dwayne Cohill: A 6’4″ guard from Cleveland, Ohio, Cohill is a redshirt freshman who originally committed to play for the University of Pittsburgh. He transferred to Dayton after one year and sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Jalen Crutcher: A 6’1″ guard from Memphis, Tennessee, Crutcher is a sophomore who played in all 34 games for the Flyers last season, averaging 7.5 points and 2.8 assists per game He was named Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year and was an honorable mention All-Conference selection.

Ibi Watson: A 6’5″ guard from Pickerington, Ohio, Watson is a junior who averaged 5.9 points per game last season while playing in all 34 games for the Flyers.

The walk-ons for the 2019-2020 season

In addition to the scholarship players, the Dayton men’s Basketball team also has a few walk-ons. Here’s a brief introduction to each of them.

Matt Williams is a 6’3″ guard from Beavercreek, Ohio. He played his high school basketball at Beavercreek High School where he was a three-year varsity letterman. Williams was named Second Team All-Great Miami Valley Conference as a senior. He chose to walk on at Dayton because of his relationship with Head Coach Anthony Grant and because he wanted to stay close to home.

Willie Moor is a 6’2″ guard from Huber Heights, Ohio. He played his high school basketball at Wayne High School where he was a three-year varsity letterman. Moor averaged 8 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists per game as a senior. He chose to walk on at Dayton because he wanted to stay close to home and because he liked the Coaching Staff and the team’s style of play.

Derekpoundz Mbamalu is a 6’3″ guard from London, England. He played his high school basketball at St. Mark’s Catholic College in London. Mbamalu averaged 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game as a senior. He chose to walk on at Dayton because he wanted to play Division I Basketball in the United States and because of his relationship with head coach Anthony Grant (they both attended St Mark’s Catholic College).

The Dayton Men’s Basketball Coaching Staff for the 2019-2020 season is Head Coach Anthony Grant, Associate Head coach Kevin Kuwik, Assistant Coach Dusty May, Director of basketball operations Geoff Sherman, and Strength & Conditioning Coach Nate Peck.

The outlook for the 2019-2020 season is looking good for the Dayton Men’s basketball team With a strong roster of returning players and some key newcomers, the team is poised for success. Let’s take a look at who’s who on this year’s squad.

Returning starters include junior guard Jordan Davis and senior forward Josh Cunningham Davis was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year last season and is one of the best all-around players in the country. Cunningham is a 6’7″ forward who is a force on both ends of the court. He averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds per game last season.

Also returning are senior guard Trey Landers and junior forward Obi Toppin. Landers is one of the best defenders in the country and can also contribute on offense, averaging 10 Points per game last season. Toppin is a 6’9″ forward who was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year last season. He averaged 14 points and 5 rebounds per game as a freshman.

The newcomers to Watch This Season are freshman guard Boogie Ellis and transfer guard Rodney Chatman. Ellis was one of the top recruits in the country and brings a high level of athleticism to the team. Chatman is a transfer from Chattanooga who will add experience and leadership to the squad.
