Introducing the 2017-2018 Monmouth Hawks

The Monmouth Hawks are a Division 1 basketball team in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). They are located in West Long Branch, New Jersey, and their home court is the OceanFirst Bank Center. The Hawks are led by Head Coach King Rice and assistant coaches Duane Wrenn, Rick Callahan, and Brian Reese.

The 2017-2018 roster includes:

-Micah Seaborn: Junior guard from Fort Worth Texas. Seaborn was named to the All-MAAC Second Team last season.
-Austin Tilghman: Senior guard from Middletown, Delaware. Tilghman was named to the All-MAAC Third Team last season.
– Diago Quinn: Senior forward from Brooklyn, New York. Quinn was named to the All-MAAC Defensive Team last season.
-Deon Jones: Senior forward from Newark, New Jersey. Jones is the Hawks’ leading scorer and rebounder from last season.

Hometown: Neptune, New Jersey
Experience: 4 years

Coleman is a 4 year guard from Neptune, New Jersey. He is a 6’2” 185-pound shooting guard Coleman led his team in scoring last season with 16.5 points per game He also averaged 3.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game

Player: Deion Hammond
Position: Guard
Hometown: Neptune, New Jersey
Experience: 3 years

Hammond is a 3 year guard from Neptune, New Jersey. He is a 6’4” 195-pound point guard Hammond averaged 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game last season.

Meet the Incoming Freshmen

This season, the Monmouth Basketball team will have six fresh faces on its roster as it looks to build on last year’s success.

Leading the way is 6’9″ forward Tyler Robinson, who was ranked as one of the top 100 prospects in the country coming out of High School He’ll be joined by fellow freshmen big men Georgios Papagiannis and Tim Priller, who will provide some much-needed size and rebounding for the Hawks.

In the backcourt, Monmouth will add shooting guard Sam Ibiezugbe and point guards Deion Hammond and Micah Seaborn. All three are expected to contribute right away and provide some scoring punch off the bench.

Player Highlights

The Monmouth Hawks men’s basketball team is currently in its third season under head coach King Rice. The team has seen a lot of success in recent years winning the MAAC regular season championship in 2016 and 2017. They have also made it to the NCAA tournament three times in the last four years.

This season, the Hawks have a very young team, with only two seniors on the roster. Despite this, they have gotten off to a great start, winning seven of their first eight games. Here is a look at some of the players who have been key to the team’s success so far.

Junior guard Micah Seaborn is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 19.4 points per game He is also shooting 42 percent from three-point range and 86 percent from the Free Throw Line Seaborn had a career-high 33 points in a win over Rider on November 17th.

Sophomore forward Diago Quinn has been one of the most improved players on the team. He is averaging 9.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game up from 4.5 points and 3.8 rebounds last season. Quinn had a career-high 18 points in a win over Princeton on November 15th.

Freshman guard Ray Salnave has been one of the most pleasant surprises for the Hawks this season. He was not expected to see much playing time but has averaged 23 minutes per game and is one of the team’s top outside shooters, making 42 percent of his three-point attempts. Salnave had a career-high 17 points in a win over Quinnipiac on November 21st.

Key Returners

Entering his junior season, Ray Salnave is the heir apparent to Justin Robinson at the point guard position. A 6’4″ combo guard from Brooklyn, Salnave averaged 8.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 35% from three-point range last season. His best game came against Iona when he scored 19 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.

Mustapha Traore returns for his senior season as one of the MAAC’s premier big men The 6’8″ forward from Canada averaged 10.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1 blocked shot per game while shooting 56% from the field last season. He had a career-high 20 points against Quinnipiac and also posted 16 rebounds in a win over Rider.

redshirt sophomore George Papas figures to see significant minutes in the frontcourt this season. The 6’9″ native of Greece averaged 2 points and 2 rebounds in limited action last season but provides the Hawks with valuable size and experience.

The Bench

This year’s Monmouth Basketball team is deep and talented, with a strong core of starters and a bench that is full of players who can contribute in a variety of ways. Let’s get to know the bench players a little better.

First up is redshirt junior Mike Holloway, Jr., a 6’7″ forward from Plainfield, NJ. Holloway has been with the team for three years and brings a lot of experience to the court. He is a versatile player who can score inside and out, and is also a good rebounder.

Next is Deion Hammond, a freshman guard from Neptune, NJ. Hammond is one of the team’s best shooters and can provide instant offense when he comes into the game. He’s also a good defender and has the potential to be a very good all-around player.

Rounding out the bench are freshmen Zach Reuter and Alex Braxton. Reuter, a 6’9″ forward from Rumson, NJ, gives the team another big body down low. He’s still learning the college game, but has shown flashes of brilliance in practice and could be a big factor for the team as the season goes on. Braxton, meanwhile, is a 6’4″ guard from Eatontown, NJ who provides even re shooting depth for the Hawks. He’s also a very good athlete and has the ability to play multiple positions on the court.

The Coaching Staff

Monmouth University’s basketball success is due in large part to the Coaching Staff Head Coach King Rice has been with the team since 2011. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Coach at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina He also spent time as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt University and George Mason University.

Rice’s right-hand man is assistant Head coach Brian Reeves Reeves has been with Monmouth since 2014 and was previously an assistant coach at La Salle University and Rider University. He also spent time as a head coach at several different colleges, including Raritan Valley Community College Brookdale Community College and Mercer County Community College

Dan Dischneider is Monmouth’s other assistant coach Dischneider joined the team in 2016 after spending time as an assistant coach at Colgate University and Holy Cross University. He also served as a head coach at Nyack College from 2012 to 2016.

The Schedule

The Hawks will open the season with a exhibition game against Rutgers-Camden on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. re Playing their first regular season game on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. against Lafayette at the Multipurpose Activity Center.

Monmouth will play a total of 31 games this season, including 16 home games 14 away games and one game at a neutral site. The Hawks will play a total of 10 non-conference games and 21 conference games.

The Expectations

The Monmouth basketball team is coming off of a stellar season in which they won the conference championship and made it to the NCAA Tournament This year, the team has high hopes of repeating that success. Here is a look at the team’s roster:
