It’s been 5 long years since the North Texas Men’s Basketball team has seen any post-season play. In that time, the team has gone through 3 different head coaches seen 14 players leave the program, and compiled a overall record of 57-87. But this season may be different. Under new Head Coach Grant McCasland, the team is off to it’s best start in years, sitting at 9-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play
The team is led by junior guard Roosevelt Smart, who is averaging 22 points per game Smart is flanked by a strong supporting cast, including junior college transfer Jahshire Hardnett and redshirt sophomore Ryan Woolridge. The team has shown marked improvement on both ends of the floor, and their tough non-Conference Schedule has prepared them well for a run at the conference title

In recent years the UNT Men’s basketball team has struggled to find its footing. The team has had three head coaches in the past four years, and has not had a winning season since 2015-16. But with a new Head Coach and some fresh talent, the team is poised to make a comeback.
Head coach Grant McCasland was hired in April of 2019, and he has since brought in some talented transfer players to help turn the team around. One of those players is guard Javion Hamlet, who averaged 15 points per game last season at Dallas Baptist University. Hamlet will be eligible to play for UNT this upcoming season

Freshman forward Mills McDermid is a 6’9″ forward who was ranked as one of the top 100 players in the state of Texas coming out of High School He will be joined by fellow freshman guard Tyrese Maxey who was ranked as one of the top 50 players in the state of Texas. Both McDermid and Maxey will be competing for starting spots on the UNT roster this upcoming season
