The history of OhioState Hockey

Ohio State University has a long and storied history of success in Ice Hockey The Buckeyes have won numerous conference championships and have made numerous appearances in the NCAA tournament

The Ohio State Buckeyes Ice hockey team was founded in 1922, making it one of the oldest programs in the country. The team has been successful from its earliest days, winning the Midwest Collegiate Hockey League title in 1925. The Buckeyes went on to win conference championships in 1934, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950 and 1951.

In 1950, the Buckeyes made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament They would go on to make appearances in 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957. The Buckeyes made it to the Frozen Four (the semifinals of the NCAA tournament) in 1953 and 1957 but were unable to win a National Championship

The Buckeyes experienced a bit of a lull in their success during the 1960s and 1970s but came back strong in the 1980s. The team won conference championships in 1984 and 1986 and made five more appearances in the NCAA Tournament between 1981 and 1988. In 1984 Ohio State finally broke through and won its first National Championship with a convincing 5-1 victory over Boston College in the final game

The 1990s were another decade of success for Ohio State Hockey as the team won three more conference championships (1991, 1992 & 1993) and made four more appearances in the NCAA Tournament (1991 & 1992). In 1998 Ohio State won its second National Championship with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against Boston University
This period also saw an influx of NHL talent coming to Columbus to play for Ohio State future NHL All-Stars such as Brian Bellows (Minnesota North Stars), Bill Guerin (New Jersey Devils) Ed Olczyk (Chicago Blackhawks), Gary Roberts (Calgary Flames) & Doug Weight (Edmonton Oilers) all donned the Scarlet & Gray during their college careers.
