The New Orleans Pelicans are an American professional basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Pelicans compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division The team plays their home games at the Smoothie King Center

The Pelicans were established as the New Orleans Hornets in the 2002–03 season when then-owner of the Charlotte Hornets George Shinn, relocated the franchise to New Orleans. Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the franchise temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City where they spent two seasons officially known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. The team returned to New Orleans full-time for the 2007–08 season. On January 24, 2013, the franchise announced it would rename itself the Pelicans, effective after that season’s end.

Team preview

After a disappointing 2019-2020 Season in which they finished with a record of 30-42 and failed to make the playoffs, the New Orleans Pelicans are looking to Bounce Back in a big way in 2020-2021. Led by superstar big man Anthony Davis the Pelicans have one of the most talented rosters in the NBA and will be looking to make a deep playoff run this upcoming season

The centerpiece of the team is, of course, Anthony Davis Davis is one of the best players in the league and is coming off of a season in which he averaged 27.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game. He is an elite two-way player who can impact the game on both ends of the court and is capable of taking over games when needed.

Joining Davis in the frontcourt is fellow All-Star big man Demarcus Cousins Cousins is one of the best centers in the league when healthy and gives the Pelicans another dominant force inside. He averaged 16.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last season before suffering a season-ending injury in January. If Cousins can stay healthy, he will form a twin towers duo with Davis that will be tough for any team to match up with.

Rounding out the starting lineup are point guard Jrue Holiday shooting guard E’Twaun Moore, and small forward Solomon Hill. Holiday is one of the best two-way point guards in the league and is coming off of a season in which he averaged 19.5 points, 6.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game while being named to the All-Defensive First Team for his effort on that end of the court. Moore is a dependable scorer who averaged 11.5 points per game last season while shooting 39 percent from three-point range he will likely see his role increase this upcoming season with Cousins out for an extended period of time due to injury . Hill is a solid all-around player who does a little bit of everything; he averaged 9 .4 points , 5 .1 rebounds , 2 .8 assists , 1 .1 steals ,and 0 .9 blocks per game last season .

The Pelicans’ bench consists of some quality young players who are looking to make an impact at the NBA level . Among them are rookie Zion Williamson , second -year guard Lonzo Ball , third – year swingman Josh Hart , fourth – year Power Forward Jahlil Okafor , and fifth – year small forward Stanley Johnson . Key players

The New Orleans Pelicans have a lot of Key Players that will be pivotal to their success in the upcoming NBA season One of those players is Jrue Holiday, who is coming off of a career year in which he averaged over 19 points and six assists per game He will be looked to as the leader of this team, and will be counted on to make plays in crunch time. Another important player is Zion Williamson who was the number one overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft Williamson is an electric young player who has the ability to take over games with his scoring and rebounding abilities. He will need to make a big impact as a rookie if the Pelicans want to compete for a playoff spot.

Key matchups

The New Orleans Pelicans will face the Houston Rockets four times this upcoming NBA season The first matchup will be at home on Nov. 8, followed by three away games on Nov. 29, Dec. 13 and Jan. 10.

Predictions

The New Orleans Pelicans are set to have an interesting season. After trading away Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers they drafted Zion Williamson with the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft The team also signed free agent shooters JJ Redick and Derrick Favors With a young core of players, led by Williamson, and solid role players, the Pelicans could surprise some people this season.

X-factors

The New Orleans Pelicans will tip off their 2019-2020 season on October 22nd against the Toronto Raptors The Pelicans are coming off a disappointing 18-19 season in which they finished 33-49 and missed the playoffs. However, there are several reasons to be optimistic about the upcoming season First and foremost, the Pelicans have one of the best young players in the NBA in Anthony Davis In addition, they made some key offseason acquisitions, including center Derrick Favors and point guard Lonzo Ball While it remains to be seen how well these new players will mesh with the existing roster, there is no doubt that they have the potential to make the Pelicans a much better team.

Another reason to be optimistic about the upcoming season is that the Pelicans will have a healthy Jrue Holiday for a full season. Holiday is one of the best two-way players in the league and he was limited to just 40 games last season due to injury. If he can stay healthy, he will be a huge asset for New Orleans on both ends of the court.

The final reason to be hopeful about the Pelicans’ chances this season is that they have a new Head Coach in Alvin Gentry. Gentry is a proven winner who has been around the league for many years. He knows what it takes to win and he should be able to get the most out of his new team.

Only time will tell how well the Pelicans will do this season, but there are definitely some reasons to be optimistic.
