The San Jose State Spartans men’s basketball team has appeared in the NCAA Tournament four times. Their combined record is 1–4.
San Jose State made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in 1989, led by Head Coach Stan Morrison. The Spartans defeated Louisiana Tech in the first round before losing to eventual National Champion Michigan in the second round.
In 1996, San Jose State again qualified for the NCAA tournament led by head coach George Nessman. The Spartans lost to Kentucky in the first round.
In 1999, San Jose State made their third appearance in the NCAA tournament led by Head Coach Phil Johnson. The Spartans defeated New Mexico State in the first round before losing to Texas Christian in the second round.
In 2020, San Jose State made their fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament led by Head coach Jean Prioleau. The Spartans lost to Florida State in the first round.

The San Jose State Spartans men’s basketball team is an NCAA Division I college Basketball team that competes in the Mountain West Conference. The team is currently coached by Jean Prioleau and plays its home games at the Event Center in San Jose California.
In 1938, the Spartans began play as an independent team. In 1950, they joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) where they would compete for nine years. In 1959, they were one of seven charter members of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (now the Big West Conference). The Spartans won their first and only NCAA Division I men’s Basketball Championship in 1990 with a 79–62 victory over Georgia Tech in Seattle.

Rickey Henderson – one of the greatest base stealers and leadoff hitters in baseball history Henderson played for the Oakland A’s, New York Yankees Toronto Blue Jays San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim during his Hall of Fame career.
Gary Payton – nicknamed “The Glove” for his defensive prowess, Payton was a nine-time NBA All-Star and is considered one of the best point guards of all time. He played for the Seattle SuperSonics Milwaukee Bucks Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat during his Hall of Fame career.
Bob Dineen – a two-Ime Nba All-Star, Dineen played for the Syracuse Nationals/Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics during his 11-year career. After retiring from playing, he went on to have a successful coaching career at the college and professional levels.
