The Charlotte Hornets were originally founded in 1988 as an expansion team. They were named after the original Hornet’s Nest, a nickname for Charlotte given by British general Cornwallis during the Revolutionary War. The team played their first game in October of 1988 and made it to the playoffs in just their second season.
The Charlotte Hornets enjoyed great success in the 1990s, making it to the Conference Finals three times in a row from 1993 to 1996. But after a series of poor seasons and financial troubles, the team was bought by Robert Johnson in 2002 and renamed the Bobcats. In 2014, after Johnson sold the team to Michael Jordan they reverted back to their original name, the Charlotte Hornets
