The UC Irvine Anteaters are a men’s Basketball team that has been on the rise in recent years In the 2017-2018 season they won the Big West Conference Regular Season and tournament titles, and earned their first ever NCAA tournament berth. They went on to upset 4th seeded Kansas State in the first round, before losing to Ohio State in the second round.
The 2018-2019 season saw the Anteaters win their second consecutive Big West Conference regular season title. They once again earned an NCAA tournament berth, and win their first ever NCAA Tournament game, defeating 10th seeded Louisville. They would go on to lose to 2nd seeded Oregon in the second round.
The UC Irvine Anteaters have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in men’s basketball, and they look poised to make a run at the NCAA Tournament again in the 2019-2020 Season
The 2017-18 UC Irvine Men’s basketball team A Season to Remember
Coming off of a disappointing 2016-17 season that saw the team fail to make the NCAA tournament despite being ranked in the top 25 for much of the year, Head Coach Russ Turner and the UC Irvine Anteaters vowed to rebound in a big way. And rebound they did. The 2017-18 Anteaters finished the season with a school-record 28 wins, including a perfect 16-0 record at home, en route to their first ever Big West Conference Regular Season championship. They followed that up with UCI’s first ever Big West tournament title, clinching an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament in the process.
This historic season was driven by a balanced attack on both ends of the court. On offense, four different Anteaters averaged double figures in scoring, led by junior guard Max Hazzard’s 13.5 points per game On defense, UCI was stingy all year long, ranking in the top 30 nationally in both opponent points per game (64.1) and opponent field goal percentage (.397).
The Anteaters entered the NCAA tournament as a #13 seed, and while they ultimately fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan in the first round, there is no doubt that this was a season to remember for UC Irvine fans everywhere.

The UC Irvine Men’s Basketball team has had a historic season. They completed an undefeated conference season and won the Big West Tournament, earning their first ever berth in the NCAA tournament The Anteaters will face Kansas State in the first round on Thursday, March 21st.
This UC Irvine team is led by junior guard Max Hazzard, who averaged 15.4 points per game during the regular season Hazzard is one of four players who average double-figures in scoring for the Anteaters. Senior Evan Leonard also averaged over 15 points per game and was named the Big West Defensive Player of the Year. Freshman center Collin Welp adds 10.5 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds per contest.
UC Irvine head coach Russ Turner has done a remarkable job in his seven seasons at the helm of the program. Turner has transformed UC Irvine into one of the top mid-major programs in the country. The Anteaters have won 20 or more games in five of Turner’s seven seasons, including a school-record 28 wins this year.

It was a record-breaking season for the UC Irvine Men’s basketball team They finished the regular season with a 27-5 overall record and a 16-2 conference record. This was the best season in UC Irvine Men’s Basketball History They were ranked in the Top 25 for the first time ever and they made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
The UC Irvine Men’s basketball team had an incredible run in the 2018 NCAA tournament They won their first ever NCAA tournament game against Kansas State They then went on to upset #4 seed Auburn in the second round. In the Sweet Sixteen they lost to eventual National Champion Villanova.
Despite the loss, it was an incredible season for UC Irvine Men’s Basketball. They made history and established themselves as one of the top programs in college basketball

The UC Irvine Anteaters have a long and storied history in the NCAA Tournament dating back to their first appearance in 1970. Since then, they’ve made it to the big dance 12 times, with their most recent appearance coming in 2019. In that time, they’ve had some great moments and some disappointing losses. Here’s a look at the UC Irvine Anteaters’ road to the NCAA Tournament over the years.
The UC Irvine Anteaters made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1970, losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the first round. They made it back to the tournament in 1973 and 1974, but lost in the first round both times. In 1975, they finally broke through, defeating UNLV in the first round before losing to Louisville in the second round.
It would be another 15 years before the Anteaters made it back to the NCAA Tournament In 1990, they registered one of the biggest upsets in tournament history when they defeated two-time defending national champion Michigan State in the first round. They lost to Syracuse in the second round that year. The Anteaters returned to the tournament in 1993 and 1994, but lost in the first round both times.
In 2002, UC Irvine finally broke through and won a game in the NCAA tournament when they defeated Texas Southern in the first round. They lost to Kansas in the second round that year. After missing out on the tournament for several years, UC Irvine made it back again in 2007 and 2008, but lost in the first round both times.

In 2017-18, the UC Irvine Men’s Basketball team put together one of the most memorable seasons in program history. A year after winning just nine games and finishing in last place in the Big West Conference the Anteaters went 23-12 overall and earned a share of the Big West regular season title with a 13-5 record in conference play UC Irvine also made its first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament defeating Texas Southern in the First Four before losing to eventual national runner-up Michigan State in the Round of 32.
