Why were they hired by Michigan Head Coach John Beilein?
When John Beilein was hired as Michigan’s head basketball coach in 2007, he brought with him a staff of assistant coaches that would help him build the Wolverines into a contender. Now, after 11 seasons in Ann Arbor, Beilein has cemented his legacy as one of the best coaches in program history. But what about his assistant coaches? Who are they and why were they hired by Beilein?
The answer to that question is a bit complicated. Beilein’s first staff was made up of former colleagues from his days as a head coach at West Virginia When he arrived at Michigan, he brought with him Jeff Meyer (associate head coach), Bacari Alexander (assistant coach), and Jerry Dunn (Director of Basketball operations).
Meyer and Alexander were both part of Beilein’s staff at West Virginia from 2002 to 2006. Dunn followed Beilein to Michigan after serving as an assistant under him atLehigh from 1992 to 1995.
These four coaches helped Beilein navigate the early years of his tenure at Michigan. But after the 2009-10 season, things changed. Meyer left to become an assistant at Indiana, while Alexander and Dunn were both let go by Michigan.
This created an opportunity for new assistant coaches to join Beilein’s staff. And that’s where LaVall Jordan (associate head coach) and Saddi Washington (assistant coach) come in. Jordan was hired by Beilein in 2010 after spending two seasons as an assistant at Iowa State Washington joined the staff in 2012 after working as an assistant at Detroit Mercy for two years.
Both Jordan and Washington have played a key role in helping Michigan become one of the top programs in College Basketball They have each been a part of two Big Ten regular season championship teams (2012-13 and 2014-15) and three NCAA tournament teams (2013, 2014, and 2016).
