The Southland Conference An Overview
The Southland Conference is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the southeastern United States It participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) for football and other sports. The Southland began athletic competition in 1963 and completed its first full academic year of competition, 1966-67.
The Southland Conference traces its roots back to 1963 when five schools joined together to form the Gulf South Conference which ceased operations in 1976: Lamar State College of Technology (now Lamar University), McNeese State University Nicholls State University Western State University and the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). These five institutions remained with the Gulf South Conference when it re-organized during the 1976-77 season; they were joined by Southeastern Louisiana University
Over the years, the conference has seen many changes. In 1991, Northeastern Louisiana (now Louisiana-Monroe) and Central Arkansas left to join other conferences. This left the conference with seven members, all located in Louisiana. In 1992, Southeast Missouri State joined from Missouri’s St Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Eastern Illinois joined from Indiana’s Mid-Continent Conference to bring membership back up to nine schools; Mississippi Valley State left after just one season in 1993 to return to Division II competition. charter member Nichols State withdrew following 1996-97 season.. Southeast Missouri left after only two seasons as well In 1998 Stephen F. Austin joined as a founding member of what became known as the West Division while Nicholls State rejoined from Division II; three years later another charter member, Mcneese State also rejoined from Division II.. When Northwesten State reorganized its athletics department in 2004 it dropped out of Division I and down to NCAA Division II level leaving just seven members.. The 2007 season saw Florida Atlantic leave for Conference USA while Centenary decided at that time that it would remain a NCAA Division III institution for all sports including basketball where it had been playing as an independent in Division I Basketball since 2003; thus dropped out as well.. Charter members West Texas State and Lamar(which had announced plans several years before that it would be leaving for football only at some point ) took their final bow at end of 2000–2001 school year with latter being replaced same season by Sam Houston which came over from Lone Star Conference . droppped out following 2001–2002 school year In 2003 Central Florida left for what is now American Athletic Conference as did Florida International following 2005 campaign while Troy moved up from NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) after just one season
